Frida Kahlo Brooch

Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly” are the spirited words of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who managed to overcome extreme physical and emotional adversity to become one of the most beloved female icons of our time. Her naive folk art style fearlessly explores controversial themes including gender, race, class, and notions of beauty in early 20th century Mexico.

This handmade brooch is a celebration of Frida Kahlo. Crafted in a naive folk art style and using vibrant colours and textures, it invokes the spirit of revolutionary Mexico.

Frida is made with wool felt. Her dress has been crafted from opulent gold and rainbow sari fabric with gold ric rac and a lace trim. She wears a wool felt shawl, an orange crow bead necklace and handmade reclaimed copper wire and crow bead earrings. The details of her face have been hand stitched and hand painted. She wears red flowers in her hair. Frida is backed with black felt and fastens with a 2.5cm silver tone bar brooch.

As with all of my handmade creations, each Frida will be slightly different to the one in the picture. She will however, still be utterly fabulous and suffused with the spirit of revolution!
